Nurture Integrative Health

It is not the horse that draws the cart, but the oats.

Avena Sativa or Oats is a nootropic herb. Nootropics are brain-specific verses a nervine that address the entire nervous system. The straw, seed, or milky stage are medicinally beneficial. Humans have been using this herb for at least 3,000 years.

Oat straw tea helps relieve inflammation and anxiety or stress by increasing cerebral circulation. Oats in all forms support healing nervous exhaustion, nicotine withdrawal, spasms, and are recommended externally for irritated or inflamed skin. Oats actions include nervine, nootropic, alternative, sedative, nutritive, and cerebral trophorestorative. This is a great ally for the nervous system.

There’s no argument that Oats are nutritious. No matter how you take them, they contain B-vitamins, lysine, methionine, calcium, iron, manganese, and zinc. They can be beneficial to those patients with decreased absorption

Use this herb with caution if:

  • you have any gluten sensitivities

  • you are currently taking morphine or nicotine.

You should always consult your physician before starting botanical medicine to meet your individual needs.

A Supportive Ally for Mental and Brain Health

Oats are effective in improving cerebral circulation by increasing vasodilation of blood vessels. They increase dopamine levels and alpha brain waves associated with increased learning and memory. Oat in all of her forms increases dopamine levels by inhibiting monoamine oxidase-B. Oat is beneficial to those with ADHD and Parkinson’s disease.

For many people, nervous system disorders have a real impact on their digestion. Oats are very nourishing and nutritive for any gut-brain axis dysfunction. Oats traditionally have been used to treat a variety of addictive disorders including morphine, nicotine, and coffee. It can also be beneficial in insomnia.

Oats contain phosphatidylinositol, which is important for improving brain-derived neurotrophic factor to decrease inflammation and oxidative stress after a traumatic brain injury. (PMID:18243629
